Nothing But Wind… Indeed!
I’m sure most of you would relate to this… Sometimes there is such an exhilarating feeling about certain things, that you thank everything around you… you feel really blessed and can’t ask for more…. That is exactly how I feel right now… For an opportunity that has come calling… perhaps as a gift of hard work I have put in all these years, in music.
Before I get carried away again by the ‘wind’…. I am performing at the live show of Nothing But Wind, maestro Ilayaraja’s non-film album released in the year 1988. The mainstay of the album is that, music is nothing but just wind and it is akin to other designs of nature involving wind.. such as breathing. The album composed by Ilayaraja sir, features respectful flautist, Sri. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, with a 50 piece orchestra. During the year of its release, I was just being initiated into music… and now… after two decades, this opportunity comes on a platter.
The past month kept me extremely busy. I was doing the notes for the pieces in the album. Though it was complex, I must admit, the complexity encloses beauty. I have always been proud of my birth having fallen during a period where I am able to appreciate, enjoy and learn from both the maestro’s and the Madras mozart’s music. Preparation for this show has helped me explore and live with the depth of musical knowledge of Ilayaraja sir and my respect for him has increased multi-fold.
This show is being organized by Ilayaraja sir’s daughter Ms. Bhavatharini and she is doing this in order to celebrate her daddy dearest’s birthday which is on June 2. I will be performing with my friends, awesome artists, Navneeth Sundar on keyboard, Aalaap Raju on bass guitar, Donnan Murray on guitar, Leon on keyboard, Geo Raj on drums and a 32 piece string section; The icing of the cake being that the maestro himself is going to inaugurate the show. The show is to be presided over by Director Bharathiraja, composer Uttam Singh and lyricist Vaali.
Its an amazing feeling… and Im falling short of words…. Guys… please join me to share my happiness… This is happening on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Music Academy at 7 PM. Tickets are available at Landmark.

2 yearss agoHi Navin,
2 yearss agoIt is wonderful to read about your exhilaration preparing for this big event…..wish I had been in Madras to attend this program!
Good luck! Hope you post some snippets after the program.
Centuries from now, such performances of IR compositions may be a common affair, but now you are the pioneer.
I could not believe that such things will happen even in my period of living.
All the Best for gthe functions ! When you have made the effort of learning IR, you have already done that, what comes on Saturday is only the repetition!

Hi Navin,
2 yearss agoCongratulations. It was an awesome show and the hard work put in by you and the orchestra showed! I hope this show will be taken to other cities around the world. Keep it going!
Hi Navin,
Mindblowing and a next to impossible performance @ the Music Academy. Honoured to hear the notes flowing from your Flute. You are gonna be my inspiration whenever I play this instrument from now on.
A big thanks to you and the MAESTRO.
2 yearss agoIn this cut/copy/paste era, thanks for letting music be !
Great to know the first hand insight on the complexities.. Fast paced Shanmugapriya in Singing self and once serenading and once awakening Hindholam in Composer’s breadth (together with its most unexpected scale changes) would have posed you adequate challenges and congratulations for pulling it off.
As much as you are privileged to play this, We are equally privileged to have true beacons of musical hope like you, who are beaming on the horizon to guide the future.
With Love
